Gua Sha is a technique developed by the Chinese mostly to treat the symptoms of stiff neck and cold from a cold or flu. It’s typically done using a Chinese soup spoon or the cut end if a piece of ginger. It’s typically a home remedy. You first put vegetable oil or massage oil on the neck, shoulders and upper back. You then take the edge of the spoon or the cut end and rub it up and down the neck, shoulders and upper back. The skin will get red and the patient will feel the area get warm. Neck stiffness will typically go away. If done too much, it will cause petechia (bruising).
